Depending on how soon Dragon Ball Super: Beerus wraps up, we could realistically see Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol premiere as early as next year. Bypassing the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to pick up right where Dragon Ball Super: Broly left off, this upcoming sequel series is set to adapt the manga’s beloved Moro and Granolah Sagas. It will likely also remake the Super Hero Arc from the ground up, given the wealth of new character development and material Toyotarou originally introduced on the page.
Goku and Vegeta are about to face their most monumental obstacles yet, with Dragon Ball Super 2 poised to unleash the multiverse’s strongest adversaries. The series will showcase some of the franchise’s finest antagonists to date—powerhouses with exceptional designs and writing on par with the absolute peaks of Dragon Ball Z. Simply put, the coming years are going to be an incredible time to be a Dragon Ball fan.

Cell Max is Far More Threatening in the Manga’s Version
The Dragon Ball Super franchise has a notorious habit of relying on simple recolors for new transformations, a trend that hit a high point in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Cell Max, essentially a giant red recolor of Semi-Perfect Cell, felt a bit underwhelming and occasionally goofy within the film’s CG aesthetic. However, because Toyotarou is a massive Cell fan, he poured immense effort and passion into every single panel featuring the beast. In the manga, Cell Max is genuinely terrifying, projecting a world-ending menace that feels truly real.
Assuming Dragon Ball Super 2 maintains its traditional aesthetic, the Super Hero Arc will be hand-drawn in the anime rather than rendered in CG. This means viewers will not only get to experience the expanded story material and Toyotarou’s darker take on Cell Max, but the overall presentation will also receive a massive visual upgrade. That said, narratively speaking, Cell Max’s core issues can’t entirely be fixed; he remains a character driven purely by nostalgia and a desire to give Gohan a modern Cell Games callback, lacking deeper personal motivations.

Gas Will Drive Some of the Most Creative Action Sequences
Personality-wise, Gas isn’t the most captivating villain in the lineup. His most intriguing trait is his lingering PTSD from crossing paths with Bardock right before Planet Vegeta met its end. Dragon Ball Super 2 has a prime opportunity to flesh him out by adding supplemental scenes or nailing his voice acting. Even so, action enthusiasts have plenty of jaw-dropping choreography to anticipate once Gas enters the fray.
Gas boasts one of the most versatile and unique powersets in franchise history, culminating in clashes against a massive roster of fighters including Bardock, Granolah, Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza. Because he can conjure magical weaponry out of thin air—ranging from battleaxes and javelins to pitchforks, swords, and wrecking balls—his fights introduce a rare, dynamic weapon-based choreography rarely seen in standard Dragon Ball brawls. He even holds the title of the strongest mortal in Universe 7 for a significant stretch.

Black Frieza Has Yet to Receive His Full Arc
Gas’s reign at the top is short-lived, as Frieza quickly steps in to reclaim his spot as the most powerful entity in Universe 7. While longtime fans are intimately familiar with the tyrant, his terrifying “Black Frieza” form will be entirely brand-new to viewers who only follow the anime adaptation. Debuting right at the tail end of the Granolah the Survivor Arc, this evolution possesses enough raw might to effortlessly overpower Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta simultaneously.
Surprisingly, this massive plot thread has not yet been fully explored in the manga. Following the conclusion of Granolah’s story, Toyotarou immediately pivoted to adapting Super Hero, and the publication subsequently entered a hiatus following Akira Toriyama’s passing. Because a dedicated Black Frieza Saga hasn’t actually happened yet, his full capabilities remain shrouded in mystery, but his fearsome reputation guarantees unforgettable moments when he finally takes center stage again.

Moro Will Deliver on Every Bit of His Anticipation
Moro is slated to serve as the primary antagonist when Dragon Ball Super 2 begins its run with the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc. This storyline introduces an ancient, malevolent sorcerer who escapes captivity and sets his sights on New Namek to exploit its Dragon Balls. By consuming life energy to continually bolster his own strength, Moro finally fulfills the terrifying potential hinted at by Dr. Gero’s creations back during DBZ.
In terms of personality, Moro channels elements of Frieza, Cell, and King Piccolo while maintaining a distinct identity of his own. Though his philosophical motivations may not be as complex as Zamasu’s, he makes for a stellar, old-school villain whose dynamic with Goku, Vegeta, Merus, and Fat Buu elevates the narrative. His escalating power steadily raises the stakes, and his eventual climax battle with Goku is all but guaranteed to break the internet once it gets animated—potentially even surpassing Goku vs. Jiren.

Granolah Stands Among the Series’ Best-Written Characters
Granolah is a phenomenal character and proof positive that Toyotarou is a worthy successor to Akira Toriyama. As the sole survivor of the Cerealian race—a civilization driven to near-extinction by the Saiyans and Bardock—he earns a living as a highly skilled bounty hunter. Despite harboring a deep, completely justified thirst for vengeance against the Frieza Force and Saiyans, Granolah is fundamentally a kind-hearted soul pushed to desperate measures by the tragedy of his past.
His narrative journey shifts fluidly from the arc’s initial protagonist to a formidable antagonist, before ultimately coming full circle back to heroism. Beyond his compelling arc and intricate personality, Granolah’s long-range combat style—built around precision strikes to quickly eliminate targets—lends itself to incredible fight choreography. Furthermore, his involvement paves the way for one of Dragon Ball Super 2‘s most anticipated milestones: Vegeta’s awakening of Ultra Ego.
